Ways to get started in the modeling business:
Physical Requirements I realize that most girls aren't super tall and stick thin. Our talent scouts have received a lot of doubtful questions from women thinking that they were too short, or too thick to be a model. These days most anything goes. Even though agencies do set certain height requirements not all of them live by it. Examples of models that do not fit these height requirements- Jamie Rishar (Company) 5’5” Kate Moss (Women) 5’7” Charlotte Dodds (Next) 5’6” Laetitia Casta (Elite) 5’7” Laura Cisneros (NY Models) 5’7” As you've probably already noticed, all of these girls are from different agencies. Which means that it is not just one agency trying to be different or trendy. These girls have a special look about them that an agent just couldn't pass up. Who knows maybe that could be you. I do want to make you aware of the physical requirements. This is only to let some of you know that you might have a rough road ahead and to prepare you for it.
For the US divisions we are seeking women who are from 5' 0" to 5'4" no more than 135 pounds or from 5'5" to 5'8" no more than 145 lbs, from 18 to 26 years old. These are for special projects that pay a lot more than the norm. England, Paris and Milan division Women need to be at least 5’9” and between 13 and 20 years old Men need to be at least 6’0” and between 17 and 25 years old (everywhere in the world) Atlanta, Miami, Chicago and LA Women need to be at least 5’8” and between 18 and 22 years old Japan Women need to be at least 5’7” and between 13 and 19 years old. As you can see most international models can be younger that 18 years old. You can send Snapshots to us by clicking on the "To Get Started" link at the bottom of the page, and if we're interested we will contact you. In a few circumstances we would look in Blackplanet, Black Voices and Collegeclub for African American women who may fit our size and weight requirements. We have had a lot of success with these sites and often come across really professional and beautiful women. We also prefer to see snapshots not “professional” pictures. Wear no make up in these pictures, our talent scouts want to see what you really look like. If you ever get an offer from our agency it is legit, and most likely you have already been selected for the position and all is next is a face to face interview. Remember, these agents are used to seeing the best photography in the world. Small town “professional photography” is not going to impress them. Along with the snapshots include your height, age, size, hair color, eye color and phone number. Be honest about your measurements! Do not follow up with a talent scout after sending your pictures. We are very busy and more than likely will not take time out to look for your pictures. We will contact you if we are interested. At that time, more pictures will be requested or a face to face interview.
Open Calls:
Many agencies hold “open calls”. This is a specific time set aside to meet with potential talent. We consider that scouting. If you do not meet our agency's physical requirement there is a chance that you will be dismissed at once. Do not wear any make up, these agents want to see the real you. Present yourself as a confident, well mannered individual. Do not drag friends, family or children in with you. We only seek models who are 18 years or older in the US because at that age you are an adult. We expect you to act like an adult and not have family, attorneys, mediators or personal contacts attempting to contact our talent scouts on your behalf. Make sure that you thank the agent for his/her time. (Even if you get turned down) Don't take rejection to heart. Remember that the staff and rosters are always changing.
Modeling Conventions:
I'm sure that you have heard the advertisements on the radio for these conventions. They claim that they have discovered many successful models and that you could be next. We don't claim to make you wealthy but our models do make a lot of money, especially those who we trust, to show up for their photo shoots.
Many other companies offer these benefits only to super models. With these companies you will meet real agents, However, keep in mind that there is always a fee with agents and we do not charge a fee. If there is a fee the fee is usually at least a couple hundred dollars and may have already been deducted from your pay. In other words we discuss pay before you take the position. Our clients depend on us to make the right decisions on what model to send for the required job. If a model is requested by a client we ask the model to do the shoot and we negotiate the pay at that time.
Local Modeling agencies can sometimes be of great assistance. Just think of all of the famous models that started out in their hometown. An agency that requires you to pay for classes, a fee to be on file or for several different photographers is bogus. These are not professionals and will only waste your time. We pay for the photographer, site of the shoot and bodyguards if needed. Sometimes local agencies will request that you sign a “mother agency “ agreement with them. It states that they will make 20% off of you forever. Be sure to think this through before signing. Make sure that an agency works well for you before signing. We only make money off the shoot you are doing, not any percentage, part or anything afterwards. This way the model will get the maximum amount of their pay.
Modeling Contests Several of the top agencies hold contests each year. Never pay an entry fee! This is a sign that they are making money off of you. Remember you want to make money, isn't that what a job is supposed to do for you?
